Deceased Member
When a Loved One Passes Away
What to Expect & What to Do Next
We’re very sorry for your loss. We understand this can be a difficult and overwhelming time. Our team is here to help guide you through the next steps and make the financial process as simple as possible.
Important Things to Know
Payments & Deposits
- If money from the government is deposited into the account after the person has passed away, it usually has to be sent back.
- Includes Social Security, VA benefits, or other federal payments
- If they arrive after the date of death, the credit union is required to return them
- Automatic payments may continue until accounts are closed—notify companies to stop drafts
Debit & Account Access
- The deceased member’s cards will be deactivated
- Joint owners may continue using their own cards if applicable
Loans & Credit
- Any outstanding balances may be paid from available funds or become the responsibility of a co-borrower or the estate
Getting Started
To begin, please notify us of the member’s passing as soon as possible so we can review the account(s) and guide you through next steps.
You may be asked to provide:
- A death certificate
- Certified copy is required
- Can often take weeks before you have a copy to provide but please let us know of their passing as soon as you are able
- Your valid photo ID
- Additional documents (if needed), such as estate or court paperwork
How Accounts Are Handled
If You Are a Joint Owner
- You may continue accessing the account prior to receiving the death certificate
- You typically assume full ownership of the funds
- The account may remain open or be transitioned into your name
If You Are a Beneficiary (POD)
- Funds are paid directly to you after required documentation is received
- Access is limited until the account is settled
- Accounts are closed once funds are distributed
If There Is No Joint Owner or Beneficiary
- Funds are paid to the estate through an appointed Personal Representative
- Additional documentation will be required (estate or court-related)
What to Expect During the Process
- Each situation is unique, and timelines can vary
- Required documentation must be received before funds are released
- Our team will stay in communication with you throughout
Helpful Reminders
- Notify employers, government agencies, and financial institutions of them passing
- Review accounts for automatic payments or deposits
- Consider speaking with a legal or financial professional for estate matters
